Cataclysm: A New WOW Expansion

In case you haven’t heard, (than you haven’t been playing enough wow) World of WarCraft has announced their next release, World of WarCraft: Cataclysm. It looks really good. I’ve included the trailer, followed by a quick rundown of some of what it includes below. But first let me state that, for the most part, this expansion is mainly directed at making the original lands (Azeroth, ie: Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms) fresh and new, and more relevant for all levels of game play.

Okay, so what’s new:

  • Azeroth has been reworked. Lands are different, quest hubs have changed, it should be a completely new experience. A couple of specific examples, as I understand them, include: Darkshore is now flooded; Barrens suffered an earthquake and is split in two. I’m sure there are lots of others.
  • Flyable mounts in Azeroth. That’s right, with the reworking of Azeroth, we will now be able to fly in the original lands. Although some zones may still be non-fly zones.
  • New race/class combinations. Some examples: Tauren/Pally, Gnome/Priest, Human/Hunter, Bloodelf/Warrior
  • Additional high-level zones. Including Uldum, Grim Batol, Mount Hyjal, Twilight Highlands, Deepholm and the great Sunken City of Vashj’ir beneath the sea.
  • Alternate character progression path, Path of the Titans. The idea is similar to talents, but rather than earning points on a per-level basis, players will earn points to assign by completing quests, defeating certain raid encounters, and completing other objectives in the game. Paths will be shared among multiple classes. Note: This is in addition to our talent trees, not a replacement.
  • New secondary profession, Archaeology. Unearth valuable artifacts and earn rewards. I believe this profession is to play a big role in the path system mentioned above.
  • Two new races. Goblins will be joining the horde. And, for the first time, a ‘darker’ race with be joining the Alliance, the Worgen.
  • Level cap increase to 85. Learn new talents, earn new abilities and don’t forget the new path system mentioned above.
  • New PvP Zone & Rated Battlegrounds. Take on PvP objectives and daily quests in a new Wintergrasp-like zone, Tol Barad Island. Also, wage war in all-new rated Battlegrounds.
  • Lots of new Raid Content. Much more high-level raid content than earlier expansions, with the option of more challenging versions of all encounters.
  • Guild Advancement. Progress as a guild to earn guild levels and guild achievements.
