To get, or not to get ….

… a puppy, that is the question. I have, for a few weeks now, tossed around the idea of getting a puppy. I’ve been checking craigslist.org daily to see what is out there. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I have given myself a very strict set of criteria to ensure that if I get a dog, it will be the right dog for me.

1. Should be a puppy.
– I’m hoping this way it will be easier to introduce to my cat, DeeDee, and hopefully avoid any ‘personality’ issues that the introduction of an older dog may present.

2. Should be no bigger than a medium size dog when full grown.
– I live in a basement apartment. A large dog would be too big for my apartment. And I’m thinking maybe a single male, living with a cat and a toy dog, well that might have a certain ‘vibe’ to it. In the words of Seinfeld, “Not that there is anything wrong with that.” :)

3. Should not be a yappy dog.
– Again, I live in a basement apartment, I have neighbors. Don’t want a dog that will be very difficult to train to not bark at every little sound.

4. No re-homing fee.
– Where I grew up, unless you were looking for a purebred, puppies were given to neighbors and friends on a first come first serve basis. I’m looking to give an unwanted puppy a home. Not to purchase a puppy. Besides, my ass is broke these days, lucky if I can afford the dog food. ;)

So far, these 4 criteria have kept me from getting a puppy. I came close to getting one when I considered overlooking criteria #2. Met this beautiful dog named Max, cross breed between a Labrador retriever and a Newfoundland dog. Being from Newfoundland myself, it was a chance for me to have a partial Newfie. But, it’s probably for the best, as I think my apartment would have been too small for the big guy, when fully grown.

Anyway, guess time will tell. I’ll keep ya posted.
